Hey all
I have the family coming over in April and they are landing at JFK. We are looking to spend a couple of days around the city and doing the tourist thing. Anyone have any idea of a cheap hotel. Dont mind an hour drive into the city as the only rooms I have found in the city are around the 400 mark. Not on. Main thing we are looking for is either driving in and parking or using public transport in for the couple of days. Only be sleeping and showering there so nothing flash needed.
Is there public transport into and out of the city that is pretty accesible.
Also what apart from the obvious ( statue, times square, central park, MSG etc ) would people recomend. This will be the familys 1st time to America and my 1st trip to the big apple.
Sorry if these seem like dumb questions but I want to make sure they have a good time.
Appreciate it guys.
Cheers

I live in Downtown Manhattan. As far as Hotels, I suggest go to NJ, right through the Lincoln Tunnel, in Secaucus, NJ.
Here's one place: http://embassysuites1.hilton.com/en_US/es/hotel/MEANJES-Embassy-Suites-Secaucus-Meadowlands-New-Jersey/index.do
I am always around Secaucus, this is a nice area. Quiet. There are a few shops there. Not much but its good.

I suggest going to Battery Park and that area and walk around. Nice place, nice park for the kids if you have little kids. Also take a walk on the WestSide Highway Walkpath. Take a nice walk up the pathway and look at the piers. If you walk straight up the path, on 23rd and 12th, is Chelsea Piers. There is bowling, ice skating, acrcade for the kids there, rock climbing, driving range for the golf people in the family. There is a ton of stuff to do there.
I know there is more but this is what I got off the top of my head. When I think of some more, I'll let you know.

Hey Jason,
Well, as for places to stay, Jersey is pretty cheap...however, you can also look into places eascily accessible from the Long Island RailRoad (LIRR) the hub is right there in Penn Station...
As for places to go in addition to what Joe Posted...def. try and check out The Museum of Natural History, Wax Museum, if into music, the B.B. King Lounge, Empire State Building
As for places to eat...Im a big steakhouse guy...Smith & Wollenskys, Del Monicos (pricy but sooo good :), Sparks Steak House...Sushi, take them to Sushi Samba in the Village, Rockn Sake is also good for sushi...GL with you research!

Jason,
My wife and I drove down to a wedding last fall.
We stayed in a nice little Jersey hotel, about $100 a night and took the city bus into Manhattan - it was a breeze.
Frankly, after spending a fair amount of time in NYC, it was relaxing to head back to the Jersey burbs.

hey guys thanks so much for the replies. Will check out what you have all said and talk to the missus and go from there. The rail sounds like a sweet deal.
Appreciate it all guys
