I replaced the intake manifold gaskets today because they have been leaking slightly. To my surprise, the gaskets were damaged considerably for having only 30k miles on the clock. Is this normal for these cars? I also replaced the oil catch pan metal gasket, although it did not show any damage.

Don't believe that would be normal after 30m miles.
Has anyone been in the heads before?
Good catch

I can't see the pics here at work, but I can tell you that its very common to tear up the rubber part of the gasket when removing the manifold to get to them. Conveinent huh.

The oil on the gaskets looks normal if you don't have a catch can. The gasket looks like it was over torqued which pinched off the soft parts. Wonder where those soft parts went?
I have been using the thermonators SP? and they work great with no leaks and they help with heat soak. Just make sure you keep the black plastic retainers from your OEM gaskets. These help with allignment.

The bolts were extremely loose when I took them off. I almost didn't need the ratchet handle. I put them back on slightly more snug.

I dont think that was the case because the gasket is burned black where it was sticking out into the air flow.

I haven't heard of it, but anythings possible. I'm running the Bwoody thermalnator gaskets now after my H/C/I install. These have been good so far and haven't leakked to my knowledge. Their thicker than the stock gaskets and made of some sort of resin material. They keep the intake and the heads from making direct contact with each other which help keeps the intake alot cooler. You can actually put you hand on the intake after its drivin to full temperature. The gaskets are alittle over a $100 from Bwoody.
