scratching the bottom carpet of my stairs.

I trim the nails yet every night he goes for the same bottom stair. Not the scratchpost.....not the couch (thank god)......just ripping up a spot on my carpet :Disappointed_anim:. Other then taking him for a nice long car ride and happen to drop him off.....are there any other solutions (no....i'd never do it......my wife and kids love him but he drives me nuts.)? Are there any sprays?

Simple, get a spray bottle of any sort. Clean it out as not to harm the animal from the previous contents, then fill it with water.

Every time the cat goes for that spot, squirt it with the bottle.
It is a simple technique and most the time you don't even have to get up to do it.
Unless of course that is that you are sitting there and the bottle is on the other side of the room.

Every time he does it, take him outside and piss on him. Worst insult to a cat you can do. It will know who the Alpha male is.

There are sprays at Petsmart or PetCo to keep animals from a spot.. You'll spray it on the carpet and kitty won't want to go there.

I would have to shampoo the rugs with it, except for a 1 inch wide line through the entire house....

I like the machine gun idea too........I don't think my wife would go for it though

Get him declawed. Almost impossible to have a cat in the house without doing it.

I still like the gun idea better :) :pounding table:

hi Buster, sorry for taking so long to respond, but I've been kinda MIA with my pops in the hospital. While all of the above options are fair (guns, sprays, peeing on cat, etc.), my best advice is to consider either (as Mr. Smith said above) front de-clawing your cat to avoid damage or eliminating access to the area. Some sprays MAY keep cats away from certain areas, but my clients have extremely limited success with them. Spraying the cat with a water bottle may irritate him enough to cause other unwanted behaviors, but IS considered an acceptable training technique and you may want to try that first. You also said above that you cut your cat's claws weekly, if this is the case, you should be able to get them short enough that the cat can't damage the carpet, this is what I do with my cats; your vet can show you how much is safe to cut. The pedi-paws mentioned above are a "Humane" alternative to de-clawing, in my experience cats tend to rip them off almost immediately, and they can be difficult to apply. Let me know if you have any other questions and I'll try to respond a bit quicker this time!

Thanks Dr. Steve.

Well.....we got some of that clear ultra stick saran wrap for the corners of the stair carpet......now it's the middle part. I just didn't know if there was a spray that I could put on the step that might keep him away from it.

The declaw thing is not an option because he is an outdoor cat and always fighting with the other cats in the neighbourhood. So I guess i'll have to make sure I keep them trim.

I hate waking up at 3am to here him going to town on the carpet on the stairs........drives me nuts.

definitely don't declaw him if he's an outdoor cat (or do it and switch him to indoors only if you can!). I would say any of the commercially available pet "avoidance" sprays sold at the major pet chains should be safe, and are worth a try; you can even try a "bitter apple" type spray and see if it makes any difference. A carpet protector (I think you can pick them up at office supply stores) is also a great idea, but you may not want a piece of plastic on your stairs 24/7. Hope any of this helps, let us know how it goes; if you end up taking one of the more radical suggestions from fellow members, please post video!!!
