Gorgeous day outside so you know the 8 is coming out to play, hit the gym and finish up, the day is looking promising so far right?
Pull out of the gym with a buddy because he wants to see what the 8's got so we go around a few blocks, this guy is loving the car so far.
Driving back to drop him off I hit a dip in the road the dashboard light up, ESP, ABS, basically anything related to traction and brakes, the dashboard looks like a Christmas tree basically and the car just rolls to a stop in drive. I shut it off put it in park and it starts rolling in reverse while in park, WTF!
Put the E brake on put it in D look under it and I can see the drive shaft spinning at the rear differential, thats one toasted diff so I think. I start looking closer and all the brackets that hold the rear diff in place have all cracked, now I cant see if there welded to the actual rear end or what but im hoping they just have to replace the diff and not the entire rear end. Ill know more Monday afternoon.
I have been hearing some weird noises from the rear lately and I guess now I finally know what it was, no big deal either I get a new diff or entire rear end. Maybe if im lucky the will drop a 2009 diff back in with limited slip, positive thinking baby, actually going to ask my dealer to ask Chrysler for a 2009 Chally diff and ill pay the difference.
sh*t happens right?

Hey Tone, I think the same thing happened to Joe (Mag 8) in his magnum. He may be able to offer some insight as well. Oh well..shit does happen. At least you know they'll cover it and on the bright side, you may be able to get something better out of it. Offer them a couple cases of beer lol.

Sorry to hear about this Tony! What kind of noises have you been hearing? Makes me wonder if I'm going to lose mine someday. Mine has always made a slight bit of gear whine since I've owned it, but I'm thinkin' you were hearing something else.

I wish, heck ide offer them the difference in price to put the 09 Chally diff in!

Its weird to describe man it was like metal fatigue noises not a whine from the actual diff, the diff grenaded because it dropped 2 inches while I was moving the gears are in pieces I can hear them.
You have to see the supports they snapped like twigs its really weird.

That is terrible with only 8k miles this shit fucking happened. Tony I think the only way for you to get the Chally rear end is by you paying for it fully because if they are fixing under warranty they have to use the VIN while ordering parts so Charger parts have to go in Chargers. But hey you never know you might get it. Good Luck!

Here is a question for everyone after this happened obviously I had to put it into drive as the drive shaft was spinning, when I did that I heard a noise from the base of the transmission as the drive shaft came to a halt, hard to describe the noise tatatatatatata, im assuming that was the gears in the torque converter as the shaft was coming to a stop.
Thoughts?
Would that not have been the "Park things" trying to lock into a rotating assembly?

Sounds like we may have different issues, T.
1/2 my rear diff. imploded on the passenger side.
I was hammer-down trying to overtake an AMG 65 Mercedes at about 85 mph when things went south in a hellish-loud "boom" then high-speed wobble/vibration before limping her to a stop.
Once I realized it wasn't the mill (thank God), I put it in gear and a grinding, deep-dull "thud" would occur with each wheel rotation. Everything forward of the rear diff was inspected and found to be fine. They replaced the whole rear end and Chrysler ate a bill of over $ 2000 CDN.

Sounds like it Joe.
The bracket on mine cracked and the diff moved down and that ate up the rear diff gears. Pic of the cracked support below. You cant see it in the picture but the bolt that is by the crack which should be at 3 and 9 oclock now is at 5 and 10 oclock

Its hard to tell in that pic, but it looks like you cracked the cradle where the diff mounts into it. That would cause a LOT of drivetrain alignment issues.

Fried the diff almost instantly while on partial throttle 30 MPH.

Wanna know how painful it was to spend the cash on the HD Heavy Shafts? It sucked...but, at least I can launch on DR's with more confidence I won't be getting towed to the nearest dealer. Word is that the Driveshaft Shop has been making their newest halfshafts from cheaper materials and more than a few a snapped. Having spent all that coin on them and still having them snap at the track would make me stroke out lol.

why R/T halfshafts?
There beefier and they also come in the 2009 6 speed Challys with 3.73 rear diff so they have to be stronger being the gearing is is for torque down low.

Thanks Tony, I don't go to the C that much anymore and when I do I don't look at that many informative threads. Its hard to be bitten by the mod bug when you have to many other resposibilties that keep one from being able to mod. So instead of looking at what I can't afford I just avoid it!

Just a small correction here Tony. If you ordered the 226mm diff. than that's the diff. from the SRT8's and is also I believe in the 6spd R/T's.
