View Full Version : What Battery Are You Using?

Hey everyone. I have a question for you. If you are not using the stock Battery, what Battery are you using? I am considering an Optima Yellow-Top or Red-Top. I've used the Red-top in the past for excessive audio applications. The thing is, I don't drive my car every day. After it sits for a week or so, I lose that top charge, etc.. Then when I go to start it, I get the rrrrrrrr - click. Take key out, try again, and it starts up. I am also considering the Battery Tender or even a second battery connected in parallel, but figured I'd go with a different battery first. Anyone know the difference between the Yellow and Red tops? Which would hold more of a charge longer etc...?
Thanks for any advice.

the purpose of a battery tender is to keep the battery "fresh" if you will by keeping a small amount of current going through it i guess is the way to put it.
by using the battery tender...being that your car isnt a DD (like mine)...it keeps bad things from happening to the current battery
and yes i say get the BT regardless of which battery you get :)

So, maybe stick with the stock one and add the Tender?
I was waiting for you to say something like, "If you want to blow up your car........etc."

You can throw it on the stock one....but i dont think it would hurt to get a real battery either lol
if i didnt just get my bat replaced under warranty for sucking i'd get an Optima

Don't know how much stock you put in 2008's Consumer Reports Best Battery pick, but its new top rated batteries are ABM batteries, short for Absorbed Glass Mat. These cost about $175 but last longer and are maintenance free.
Others I've found : the NAPA Performance Select 8465 ($80) was the clear winner due to long life and an excellent cold cranking amps (CCA) score. The NAPA battery is maintenance free and the warranty is 24 months free replacement 84 months prorated. The reserve capacity is not as good as the AutoCraft Titanium 65-2 ($80) which was excellent. If you live in moderate climate, the Duralast 65-DL ($70) is worth looking at. You give up some CCA but still get plenty of reserve capacity. Car Battery for Warm Weather:
Those living in a warm weather climate should consider buying the Diehard 39990 ($100) or it's equivalent since it's rated well for life and reserve capacity. The Interstate batteries are more expensive than a lot of the other brands but their performance is no better so it makes no sense to go with them unless you find a deal.

I'm on my 2nd red top Optima on my Mustang, great battery. Also I have the Battery Tender and would highly recommend it. Works flawlessly and will not ruin the battery by overcharging it. Also it won't blow up anything, used mine for over 10 years now on my Mustang (yea, that's how long it's been parked), wife says it looks like it's on life support BUT ... it works.

When you guys say "battery tender", is that like a trickle charger? Do you hook it up while the car sits in the garage?

It's better Milan, it won't overcharge the battery like a "trickler" does. It's called The Battery Tender, it's a little black charger-looking box and you hook it up the same way as a charger and leave it on. It'll cycle on and off to keep the battery at full charge, works pretty good. Yea, it's hooked up to my Mustang in the garage.

Cool, thanks for the input.

Exactly. There is one that you can actually mount in the car, near the battery and has a plug to plug in outside of the car.

Would you recommend:
1. Batter Tender Jr., or
2. Power Tender Plus
I'm leaning towards the Power Tender Plus

We don't really have that problem with the LX platform - our batteries are in the trunk.

I tried to start the car last night since it's garaged for the winter but felt the itch to go blast around in it some....freakin' battery was dead. I hate these batteries. Total pieces of shit. This means, I'm in the market for the best I can find. Let me know what you guys are thinking. I've read good things about the Napa and Sear's Duralast. Costco now sells Red and Yellow top Optima's and they're return policy is the shiz.

The Tender Plus is the one I have (well, it's pretty much what mine looks like since mine is so old), works great ... on my Mustang where the battery is in the engine compartment tho. I leave the hood "popped" and the tender right next to the car on a little bench and run the wires under the open hood to the battery. It just stays like that. Now the Charger bat is in the trunk right? Hmmmm, you'd have to leave the trunk ajar to run the wire in there and that might drain the battery. Hmmmm ...

Yeah put I would just mount the tender in the trunk near the battery and use an extension cord from the house socket to the tender and close the trunk.

I know they do require some ventilation, I wonder how it'd do in the trunk. I don't think it gets too hot so you should be ok there but maybe being in an enclosed space might not be too good, don't know. Worth a try tho, it does work good.:D

I'd go w/a yellow or blue. http://www.optimabatteries.com/optima_products/
Living in the cold I like batteries w/at least 1000CCA. http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?autofilter=1&part=PWM-D2700&N=700+4294908110+4294908099+4294925081+4294925143+ 4294839060+4294769489+115&autoview=sku

So, last Sunday I pulled the car out to straighten up the garage, then back in when I was done. I went to drive it on Wed. and the fuckin battery was dead - again. WTF?!?!
Earlier in the week I spoke with an Optima tech, and they recommended the Red Top since I don't live with the white powdery stuff. So I went to my local Advanced Auto and bought an Optima Red Top type 34R. The stock battery's cold cranking amps is 750, and the Optima I got is 800. Fit was not a problem. Oh, and now have a Battery Tender on the way, but may get a CTEK that was also recommended by the Optima tech.

braille makes an ultra light weight battery for racing application or daily driver. Just make sure you get the right cranking power for your excellent stero system.

WOW...I went to start the car a few days ago and the battery was totally dead. I went out today and bought a good battery charger and it won't even freakin charge the thing. Voltage was at 0.1 on the meter. Wondering if they'd cover it under warranty or should I just go out and buy a new one? Crappy Mopar batteries.

Thats what they lead me to believe. But the Yellow top have a lower cranking amp rating than the Red.?.

Just my :twocents: but I got two Blue tops in my Suburban, with a custom alternator. It was nice that the Suburban has a double battery kit right from the dealer that comes with the second battery tray, and the connection cables.
