View Full Version : SRT8 Slotted Rotors: Rotate or Buy New Ones

I guess my first question is can they be rotated? I would go check myself but I had knee surgery yesterday and starting the thread is easier! LOL

My car has around 40K miles with the slotted rotors. I'm not noticing any shaking. What sort of mileage are most getting with their rotors?

Do you mean turned...like on a lathe? If that's what your asking then the question is yes. I had my rotors turned when I put on my new Posi-Quiet pads several months ago. I haven't noticed much difference, but when the slotted rotors are turned they obviously don't have the same deapth they used to and probably aren't as efficient at dissipating heat and gasses on the rotor surface. Since I know how important braking is to you I would suggest you don't have them turned and just buy new ones. In case your wondering...I had a local Dodge dealer turn my factory slotted rotors.

I'd buy new ones at this point, but I'm also anal.........retentive. :) About stuff like this. I say get new ones. Look into Powerslot and R1 Concept, or just call BMC Performance :).........

Thanks Steve! So turning is isn't the other side of the rotor?!!! My knowledge about car mechanics is rearing it's ugly head...LOL! How much depth should I have before buying new ones?

Since I didn't know there was a "fresh" side on the other side of the rotors I'll buy new ones for sure! Thanks for the tip on Powerslot! How do they compare to factory and R1's?

A TON of guys on the Jeep site dig the R1 Concept stuff, but I don't have personal experience. Although it seems to be pretty good stuff, I don't know how long they've been around. But with Powerslot, these guys have been around for YEARS. Quality product and great price too.......

Bas****s at my local 5 star wanted $1900 CDN for all new pads and rotors.

They were clear that they couldn't turn the rotors because they were slotted and I was so amazed at the cost so kept 'em and went new pads only at 38,000 kilometers. They wanted $ 200 each rotor plus shop time.

So, $1200 for new pads. I got mah-fuckin hosed...

I'm not an expert Rick, but it wouldn't make sense to me if they only turned the outside surface of the rotor without turning the back side of the rotor. The back side of the rotor should be slotted also and either side could be grooved, scorred, etc. I don't know what the factory specs are for minimum rotor thickness, but I'm sure if you contacted your local dealer they'd tell you. I do know that if you get them turned like I did mine, that the depth of the slotted grooves themselves becomes less, which may affect braking performance during heavy stopping. I checked the 2 sites that Chase listed(TireRack and R1 concepts) and their rotors are very pricey. I went to the Mopar SuperCenter and they sell the factory OEM Brembo rotors for like $76 a piece for the fronts and $73 for the OEM rears. This is a alot cheaper and a better deal IMO.

for your slotted rotors you probably could get them "turned". Meaning put on a lathe and have them made smooth again. If you do this, make sure you get new pads. And then "bed" the pads accordingly.

As for the slots...it will be ok if they aren't as deep it won't affect the stopping power of your car. the slots are there purely to remove debris and to help keep the pads clean. Some will say to help remove outgassing from the brake pads but that really shouldn't matter. There was a time where drilled rotors were needed to remove the outgassing so as not to create a "barrier" between the pad and the rotor. But today's brake pads are better then the ones years ago.

Now yes there are some mega performance cars that have slotted and/or drilled rotors and that's fine because the brakes are gigantic and have massive surface area and to help dissipate the intense heat they drill them to help cool them.

If your brakes are performing normally then you are fine and I wouldn't do a thing. But DO check the pad thickness to make sure you are good to go.

Good advice right there. I know the dealers gouge us here in Canada because I think Mag8 (joe) was quoted over 1400 bucks for new rotors, pads and install. I think he chose to have them turned with new pads and they turned out good.

I bought R1s for my RT for about the same price as OEM from the dealership (even with discount) I would think the aftermarket stuff would be a bit better quality.

If u have no vibration i would just keep them and put new pads.,
