Autumn in the Midwest means cold cider and warm doughnuts to a lot of folks, but for the C/D staff, it also means the weeklong rousing of a few quiet burgs as we descend on a rural route about 30 miles from our Ann Arbor office in search of the coming year’s 10Best cars.
This year, our home base changed—we upgraded to a location with a paved parking lot in the interest of floor-mat preservation and real bathrooms in the interest of staff sanity—but the roads traveled did not. Our traffic violations numbered zero, a nice change of pace from last year’s record total. Our judging criteria and the rules, however, remain constant.
Cars are judged on three points. The first is how well they perform their intended functions—sedans and hatchbacks should be spacious and versatile, economy cars should be frugal (but not punishing), and sports cars should be responsive and satisfying. Secondly, we consider how engaging a car is on an emotional level—do we emerge from a drive with a smile, and does it hold our gaze as we walk away? Finally, we look at how competitive a car’s pricing is for the levels of versatility, practicality, and fun it offers. We recognize value when we see it and we highlight those cars that possess it.
Eligibility for 10Best is determined based on newness and past 10Best success. All cars either new or significantly redesigned are allowed. Additionally, cars that made the list in 2008 are automatically invited back for 2009, providing they still clear our price cap—2.5 times the average new-car transaction price for all light-duty vehicles sold through August of the previous year, or $71,000 this time around.
If a car fails to make the list its first year on the market, it’s out of contention until a significant redesign renews its eligibility. Conversely, if a car consistently impresses us enough to be voted to the list year after year, it can remain on the list indefinitely, even if it receives no updates. But all eligible cars must be available for sale no later than January 2009.
While Car and Driver is staffed by enthusiasts, the 10 Best cars are not just the ones we recommend to our hotfoot readers. These are cars we recommend to everyone.

LOL @ Stevo!
yeah, they do seem to fuckin' repeat themselves lol. Get rid of both Hondas. The top 3 are cool and quite the performers as well. Although I like some Porsches, I hate the aforementioned ones...mostly because a real estate guy that lives in the neighborhood has one and looks like a fag...thereby ruining it for all Boxster owners in my eyes.

This is probably one of the few times I will disagree with ya boys......
You gotta realize they try to cover all the bases in this top ten. Some will be performers, some will be for economical consumers, some will be for everyday value. I think Car & Driver is a great mag, I've been a subscriber for years now. They're not going to put an E63 or an IS-F or an M5 on this particular list. This "Top 10" is designed to be realistic for MOST people. Not for the dreamers, and not for the rich. I'm not saying I'm gonna go buy a friggin Honda Fit. But I am saying I can see why they chose it, for the category it's in. However, I do agree that they could have tossed in a Lexus IS-250 or a 540 Bimmer......see where I'm comin from??

I see what you're saying Chase man... but surely there must be another car than can satisfy all those requirements and still beat out an accord or a fit no? It's just the styling is so dull that I can't them making the such a list. Economy? Sure. Reliability? Perhaps. Styling? Nuh uh. :headshake:

They're supposed to be "un-biased" but just read one of their articles, any, on anything and you'll see otherwise. For me it was the 99 Durango we bought new in 99. I researched and CR HATED the Durango with a passion, everything about it they despised. I still thought we should test drive it so the missus and I did and everything, and I mean EVERYTHING, CR complained about or hated was inaccurate or an out and out lie, they were so wrong it was amazing. We bought it and would still have it today if not for the need for more room (yea a minivan), it was a GREAT truck!! And I will never EVER listen to CR again. Bunch of azzhats.

Nope. Priority one this spring are two things (other than new mods): #1) Dyno. #2) Drag strip.

2009 BMW 3-series / M3
Yay: This is because of my own bias and I like. Case close. lol
2009 Cadillac CTS / CTS-V
Nay: The CTS is a POS. Its overprice and over hyped. It looks good but its not worth the price tag. If I have gotten a CTS with the same things that I have in my Z then it would have cost me 10K more. I know, I looked.
2009 Chevrolet Corvette
Yay: Good call. I have nothing else to say about that.
2009 Honda Accord
Yay: Its cheap, gets good gas mileage, last for ever, keeps it value, and is quicker than the Z when you have the V6 model. Can't complain.
2009 Honda Fit
Yay: Pretty much for the same reasons for the Accord minus the quickness.
2009 Infiniti G37
Yay/Nay: I like how quick the G37 is but it look just like the 10K less
Nissan Altima. I'm not paying 10K more for a RWD configuration.
2009 Jaguar XF
N/A: The jury is still out on this on. I dont know enough about this car to say yay or nay on.
2008 Mazda MX-5 Miata
Nay: Much like the Sky Red line and the Solace GXP. The car and the blueprints has to be burned and never ever be talked about again. Anybody over 200lb or 6ft tall can fit in those cars with ease. Any car like that sucks. Like me, and most Americans we are big and fat and we need bigger cars lol.
2009 Porsche Boxster and Cayman
N/A: The jury is still out on this on. I dont know enough about this car to say yay or nay on.
2009 Volkswagen GTI
Yay/Nay: Its a nice car but the RS32 made the GTI look like shit.

One thing to remember is C&D has their own agenda and not to get too riled up over it, just realize they're azzhats that don't know dick bout cars and only love Bimmers and you'll understand. It's only their opinion, like assholes we all got one.
But for the sake of making a contributing post here I'll give my 2 cents on their picks even tho I've never driven most of these cars ...
M3 -- yes
CTS/V -- ok
Vette -- definitely
G37 -- sweet
Jag XF -- ok I guess
Miata -- uh no, a dinosaur
Boxster/Cayman -- yes
GTI -- yes but only cause the R32 isn't made anymore
As for the Hondas, they don't fit in at all and shouldn't be here. This list of 10 Best Cars is obviously biased towards performance cars so they don't belong at all, C&D can't do anything right the idiots.

The more I think about this list the madder I get at C&D, if their criteria for "10 Best" is performance then where's all the Porsches, Ferraris and Lambos?? Idiots.
