2010 Chevrolet Camaro: From Concept to Production

From Edmunds:

If there's ever been a Camaro that says "bad ass" like the first Camaro did, this is it, hands down. The Chevrolet Camaro Concept looks like the car you drive if your name is "Butch" and you strike matches on your stubble. The styling elements recapture that crucial aspect of the original design philosophy; a rebellious one that fell through the cracks as the decades poured on after 1969.

The designer of the Camaro Concept Coupe and the Camaro Convertible Concept, Sangyup Lee, had no idea the Chevrolet Camaro was so iconic. "I was kind of glad I didn't know how strong of an icon the Camaro was when I was first working on the project," he admits. Working without pressure allowed him to come up with the vicious concept everyone's talking about. Gills in front of the rear wheel arches evoke the original car while radical angles are said to be inspired by planes like the YF-22 fighter jet.

Dealers Will Start Taking Orders in October for 2010 Chevrolet Camaro SS

We've driven the silver Camaro Concept, which debuted at the 2006 Detroit Auto Show. It was built on a heavily modified Cadillac STS platform, and bits from many rear-wheel-drive General Motors vehicles were used to make the concept drivable. But the result was a taut and virtually rattle-free ride. We had expected the concept to be a veritable rattletrap, being hand-assembled and all. And we love being wrong about things like this.

Performing as it always has, the 400-horsepower LS-2 6.0-liter V8 provided far more power than we ventured to tap, fearing instant ejection from the GM proving grounds. Monster 14-inch front rotors easily burned off the modest speeds we achieved. The huge 21- and 22-inch Goodyears did their jobs without protest.

GM gave the Chevrolet Camaro Concept a green light for production in August 2006. According to GM Chairman Rick Wagoner, the 2010 Chevy Camaro will be "virtually identical" to Lee's concept. That's a good thing. The Ford Mustang concept in 2003 was a far cry from the car that came to showrooms in 2005. Hopefully the road-going Camaro will come with the bulging rear fenders and sinister chop-top roof that make the concept look so evil.

Despite still being two full years away, America has already been exposed to the 2010 Chevrolet Camaro in three forms; coupe, convertible and er...Transformer. Chevy's upcoming muscle car has a lead role as "Bumblebee" in this summer's blockbuster, The Transformers. And while driving the $2-million Camaro Convertible Concept was an experience, we had the opportunity to rip burnouts in the bright orange Bumblebee movie car while the Paramount guys weren't looking. And no, it doesn't actually turn into a giant robot.

By the time the Camaro makes showroom floors, it'll need to be ready for stoplight battles with the Dodge Challenger and the existing Ford Mustang, both of which will already be roaming the streets. Strapped with a familiar LS2 V8, impromptu drag races shouldn't pose a problem whether you're using the standard six-speed automatic transmission or rowing through the six-speed manual. And it might not even be so bad to commute with, either.

The production car will be built off a derivative of GM's new Zeta platform, developed by GM's Australian wing, Holden, and shared with that company's new Commodore. That means MacPherson struts up front and a fully independent rear suspension. If GM can stick to the game plan, the 2010 Chevy Camaro might be more than enough to fight off the Challenger, the Mustang and the evil forces of the Decepticons. So dust off your leather jacket and start growing that facial hair.

The concept car looked great in person at the autoshow, but the pics I've seen of the production version in the mags just don't look that good, especially the rear of the car. I definitely won't be running out and trading in my Charger for one and look forward to spanking one on the street in the very near future.:racing::D

Def an awesome car...I thought they were making a turbo charged V-6 as well?? Im trying to get my Dad to spring on this, but he likes big roomy cars and will prob get the New Escalade or maybe an Overland...hed like to get a Jeep like mine, but Moms hates how reponsive/fast my jeep is lol.

I hear ya Ry. Tried to get the wife to pick up a Jeep SRT8 and she wouldn't have it after driving one. Fraidy cat. She has never driven my car after me trying to get her to just take a boot in it. Now that it's modified so much, I don't think I'd want her taking it out and about without some practice. I have to say, I love the Challenger and the Camaro...but we all know how slow Mopar is and how secretive Chrysler is with their damn ECU/PCM code....the Chevy probably already has modifications just waiting to be released for the damn thing. Once the kids are grown up a bit...a fast 2 door coupe will be on my radar and it will have to be either a Mopar or Chevy.

Screw the SS...The Z28 (when will it happen? who knows) is supposed to have the LSA motor the Caddy CTS-V is going to have. Now that would rock!

Very true Milan...my G/F drives my Rig when ive had one too many drinks, and I trust her with it (she drives a lifted 5 spd. Wrangler on 33" BFG Mud Terrains....Shes still getting used to me driving I think (only had it since December last year) and she mostly just passes out while im driving now. As for my Mom, she hates to drive my car- I asekd her to pick me up from teh train station- when I walked out of the station she was sitting in shotgun...gotta love these Hemis..
If your lookin at a 2 door coupe- def go for the Camaro or maybe even an Older Z06 if i were you.

They had a vert one at the SF Auto show last week and I've gotta say I'm lovin this car! I've seen it for a few years now at the show and it was just as awesome this last time as the first (btw had to watch Tranformers again and once I finally took my eyes off Megan Fox I saw the car!).

This is DEF a car I could own. IF Chry does do a 6.4L I'm thinkin in a couple years selling the Mag and the Stang and getting a 6.4L manual black Chally OR this new Camaro, it's that bad azz!!

Yeah its a nice car. Now go build one on line. I did. I found out the price is almost equal to an SRT8 Challenger. Oh the SS starts in the low 30's, but to get it the way i would I think it was closer to $43k....for a CAMARO...hello!?!?

granted I love Camaro's. I do. I have had many of them. Even the coveted 69 Model. And maybe down the road I will have one again(well besides the SS in my garage now that is) But if I had to choose between the Challenger or the Camaro? I'd take the Challenger. Even if it is a hair bit slower (on paper).

Do I think the Camaro is going to sell? Absolutely because it IS gorgeous. But It looks a little "squatty" to me. But when i see one in person (i.e. on the street not at a Auto show) then I will know.

I think the new Camaro is going to get a lot of buyers, and after all the dealers gouge and mark up the car for the first year then you should really be able to get a nice one.

The new one looks ok, but the car shown in Transformers is HOT! Almost as hot as your sexy ass!!!LOL I owned a 69 Camaro SS many years ago and that's still one of my all time favorite body styles of any muscle car. If I had tons of money I'd take a 69 Camaro and upgrade all the drivetrain and interior to make it like a new car. Now that would be cool as shit!

That's pretty cool that your cousin still has it and turned it into a bad ass ride. I haven't seen my car again after I sold it. It was hugger orange with white z-28 stripes in it, had the cowl hood and I had the original SS wheels repainted and put them on. It was a beautiful car, but it was my only car at the time and after 1 winter of driving it in the snow and ice, I decided to get rid of it.

That's not what you implied earlier in the other post...but yes, mine's been gone for over 10+ years now. I only had it for about a year and am not sure why I even bought it since it was going to be a DD. I sold my 89' 5.0 Mustang convertible to buy the Camaro and after driving it through the winter, I decided it wasn't the best car to have as a DD. It was beautiful though!

I know what mod your talking about, but if your going to do that, then get a CMR tune also at the same time. When I was talking about mods, I was talking about alittle more serious stuff, but I always forget you live in Nazi Land. Hell, if you don't want to do a cam, then just get a nice set of ported & polished heads and intake. That shouldn't affect emmisions that much and nobody will ever know if have done anything to the motor. Oh, by the way...I 've dreamed of spackling your ass a dozen times!!!!:jackoff:

You've never mentioned nitrous before, so I would've never guessed that. I've been thinking about it myself, but I would go for a 125 shot if I ever do it. Maybe next year if ever at all. I've still got some smaller things I want to do first.
